Yasmin & Jamil’s Ismaili Wedding

Wedding Planning by Alicia Keats | Wedding Photography by Gucio Photography

When I started working with Yasmin and Jamil on their wedding, I realized we shared a number of things in common –from our love of doughnuts and good food, to our similar taste in flowers.

I also loved the chemistry between Yasmin and Jamil, and they worked as a team which I really admired. I enjoyed their banter and they had a great sense of humour throughout the planning. Jamil and his groomsmen even played a horrible trick on me the morning of the wedding – they called me while I was in the middle of ceremony set up to tell me that Jamil was having cold feet. Like any good wedding planner, I leapt in to action before realizing that the giggling and suppressed laughs on the other end of the phone meant that it was all for fun. I don’t think my heart stopped racing for the rest of the wedding day.

Yasmin and Jamil wanted an intimate, beautiful, understated wedding – and I loved putting the various parts of their wedding together to create a truly special day for them. Their wedding ceremony was at the Ismaili Centre in Burnaby, where they had nikah followed by traditional ceremonies. Yasmin and Jamil really wanted to honour their religion and celebrate their culture, as their Ismaili faith is very important to them. Yasmin looked so happy as she walked down the aisle hand in hand with Jamil – I loved that they walked down the aisle together. Her make-up was done by one of our faves, Denise Elliott.

Following the ceremony, sherbet and sweets were served (for those not familiar with the Ismaili culture, sherbet is like a delicious strawberry milkshake).

The party then went on to Shaughnessy Restaurant, on the edge of the beautiful VanDusen Gardens, for the reception. Flowers arranged by Flower Factory lined the tables – a stunning mix of peonies, roses, ruscus, lilac, hydrangea, and eucalyptus. There was a delicate bouquet of lavender at each place setting for the guests, and the couple served lavender lemonade as a refreshment.

Guests enjoyed Lucky’s Doughnuts as a late night sweet treat (in the shape of “XO”). The couple’s cake was made by Sweet Revenge, which is where Yasmil and Jamil went for their first date.

I was so happy to see this couple get married, and we wish them a wonderful (and doughnut-filled!) married life together!

With love,

Alicia xoxo

Barbara and Andrew’s Fairmont Waterfront Wedding

Wedding Planning by Alicia Keats | Wedding Photography by Smitten Photography UK

When I think back on this wedding, the thing that comes to mind is that the whole wedding was planned via Skype… and that I met Barbara and Andrew for the first time, three days before their wedding! As this was a destination wedding based in Vancouver, we were dealing with 8-hour time differences, as well as finding time to plan the wedding in Barbara and Andrew’s busy lives. Both of them did a lot of travel for work.

Barbara and Andrew had been living in the UK for a while, so they wanted their wedding to incorporate their memories and experiences in London. Their décor was inspired by Sketch bar in London, a quirky and playful space, and the couple wanted to create a very similar look – an enchanted forest feel without exceeding their budget.  Wedding Design Studio and Granville Island florist did an outstanding job bringing the look together for them.

The photographer was also from abroad, and he flew in just a few days before the wedding. We worked with him so he quickly got to know Vancouver’s most beautiful, picturesque locations so he could create a beautiful shoot for the couple.

My most favorite thing about working with Barbara and Andrew was how affectionate they are with each other. It was clear that they had a deep love for each other, which was beautiful to see. Andrew absolutely adores Barbara, which I could see the moment I met them by the way he looked at her, or gently touched her hair, or put his arm around her. In a similar vein, I could clearly see the respect that Barbara has for Andrew.

We were delighted to help Barbara and Andrew plan their dream, Sketch-inspired wedding, and we wish them a wonderful married life and future together!

With love,

Alicia xoxo

Sarah & Justin’s Loft Wedding

vancouver-wedding-fall-bamboo-trees-couple

Wedding Management by Alicia Keats | Wedding Photography by Dallas Kolotylo Photography

We were thrilled that a couple of weeks ago, Sarah and Justin’s wedding was featured on Rock ‘N’ Roll Bride. It seemed like a perfect time to feature them on our blog as well!

Working on Sarah and Justin’s wedding was especially meaningful for me because Sarah is one of our talented Wedding Day Coordinators and I adore her to bits. She has been with us for quite a few years and I was so excited to help her and be there for her on her wedding day as she has been there for so many of our brides.

Sarah did all of her own wedding planning and I helped with her wedding coordination so she could be fully present on the day. I loved watching the wedding design come together as we got closer to the day, as I knew it would be personal. Sarah is crazy talented and very creative. Sarah designed the flowers herself, created all the signs and found all the décor elements such as the giant gold frames for the ceremony backdrop and the rugs. I just love the eclectic, bohemian, art deco feel of her design, it is very Sarah.

Sarah and Justin wanted an alternative wedding that really focused on the parts they cared about most – having a great time with their friends and family, in a relaxed atmosphere and a killer dance party. They wanted to avoid traditions that didn’t resonate with them and keep the ones that did.

Sarah and Justin were married at The Loft in Yaletown. Sarah wore Nicole Miller with a custom headpiece by Olivia the Wolf and Jasmine Hoffman did her make up. Instead of a seated dinner, they had cocktail-style food stations and passed canapes. This added to the fun, relaxed, party vibe. They also cut a pie, made by Justin’s Grandma, instead of a traditional cake. For dancing, their DJ, the talented Michael Fraser, played his violin along to the songs, which was a great surprise that all the guests loved. Everyone danced into the wee hours of the morning, it was truly a wonderful day.

With love,

Alicia xoxo
